Newly confirmed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has advocated the urgent establishment of a unified national identity and biometric database as the most potent weapon to permanently combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity in Nigeria.
Speaking shortly after his confirmation by the Senate on Wednesday, the former Chief of Defence Staff declared that without a credible, centralised database linking BVN, NIN, SIM cards, passports, voters’ cards and vehicle registration, criminals will continue to operate anonymously and evade justice.
“We cannot win this war with bullets alone when the enemy hides among the population and melts away after every attack,” General Musa told journalists outside the National Assembly.“
"A comprehensive, real-time national database will make it impossible for terrorists, bandits and kidnappers to open bank accounts, buy SIM cards, register vehicles, or move freely without being flagged. Once we deny them anonymity, the battle is half-won.”
He promised to make the creation of such a database one-stop security database his top priority at the Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior, NIMC, NCC and the armed forces.
General Musa, who led Operation Hadin Kai against Boko Haram and coordinated nationwide counter-terrorism efforts as CDS, stressed that modern warfare against non-state actors is won through superior intelligence and data dominance, not just firepower.
The Minister-designate said he will present a detailed roadmap to President Bola Tinubu within his first 30 days in office.
