President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to making local government autonomy fully effective in Nigeria, stressing that true independence for local councils requires direct access to their statutory allocations without interference from state governors.
Speaking at the 14th National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Thursday, President Tinubu urged APC governors and party leaders to strictly comply with the Supreme Court's judgment on local government financial autonomy.
"To me, the local government autonomy is and must be effective," the President said. "There is no autonomy without a funded mandate. We'll give them their money directly. That's the truth. That's compliance with the Supreme Court."
He emphasized that leadership must extend to the grassroots level, calling on governors to be flexible, tolerant, and actively involved in governance beyond state capitals.The President's remarks come amid ongoing efforts to implement the 2024 Supreme Court ruling, which declared it unconstitutional for governors to control or withhold funds allocated to local governments.
During the same meeting, Tinubu also renewed his push for the establishment of state police to address security challenges and called for greater inclusion of women in party structures.
The caucus gathering brought together key APC stakeholders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and governors from the ruling party.
