The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate dismissal of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Executive Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, accusing him of "gross incompetence" and failure in managing the rollout of Nigeria's new Tax Reform Laws set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday night by NANS National President Olushola Oladoja, the student body declared January 14, 2026, a "National Day of Action."
They plan to mobilize students across the country for a peaceful mass protest marching from Unity Fountain in Abuja to the gates of the Presidential Villa.
The announcement follows President Bola Tinubu's recent reaffirmation that there will be no delay in implementing the reforms, despite widespread criticism, including allegations of discrepancies in the gazetted laws and inadequate public consultation.
NANS criticized the FIRS leadership for insufficient stakeholder engagement, especially with students and vulnerable groups, leading to confusion and resistance.
Oladoja described the Presidency's insistence on proceeding as a "grave insult" to Nigerians, emphasizing that "the power of the people is always greater than the people in power."
The students argue the reforms, as currently designed, will add economic strain on ordinary citizens already facing high living costs.
They warn that unchecked implementation could heighten social tensions and erode trust in government.
Key demands include suspending the Tax Reform Laws pending broader consultations and removing Adedeji over alleged failures in design, execution, and public education efforts.
NANS has urged all its structures, campus chapters, state bodies, and zonal coordinators to begin immediate mobilization for the Abuja protest, with further details to follow.
