Taraba State Police have detained a 45-year-old inspector and his girlfriend in connection with the disappearance of a loaded assault rifle from a residence near the Wukari–Jootar Federal Highway.
The firearm, a Type 06 assault rifle with 25 rounds of live ammunition, belonged to Inspector Joshua Charles, a member of the Safer Highway Patrol team.
Sources indicate that on December 25, around 3:00 p.m., Inspector Charles left his duty post in Wukari town, leaving three colleagues, Inspectors Haruna Galadima, Isah Waziri, and Umar Mohammed on patrol.
Later that evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m., his girlfriend, Ruth Alphancis from Sabon Gari in Jalingo who had been living with him since August 2025 returned from Jootar village in neighboring Benue State.
She reported seeing an unidentified individual fleeing the house.Upon Charles's return from Wukari, reportedly intoxicated, he discovered the rifle which he had left in the room was missing.
The weapon's breach number remains unknown.
Police operatives promptly visited the scene, and intensified efforts are underway to recover the rifle and identify any suspects.
Both the inspector and his girlfriend are currently being held to assist with the ongoing investigation. Authorities are collaborating with local residents and hunters in the search operation.
