Reno Omokri Urges Lagos Govt to Lobby for James Bond Film Shoot During 'Detty December'

Popular social commentator and author Reno Omokri has suggested that the Lagos State Government should actively lobby Eon Productions, the company behind the James Bond franchise, to film scenes from an upcoming Bond movie in Lagos during the vibrant Detty December season.

In a post shared on his social media platforms, Omokri argued that such a move could dramatically boost tourism to the city, drawing a parallel with how Bangkok benefited from featuring in the 1974 Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun.

He pointed out that cities selected as Bond filming locations are rarely chosen randomly, often involving significant lobbying and financial incentives from host governments.

Omokri highlighted Thailand's example, noting that before 1974, Bangkok was relatively unknown as a tourist spot.

The Thai government reportedly lobbied and provided support for the production, which featured iconic scenes in Phang Nga Bay, including what is now famously called James Bond Island.

The result has been transformative. Bangkok has since become a global tourism powerhouse, topping Euromonitor International's 2025 rankings as the world's most visited city with an estimated 30.3 million international arrivals this year.

Omokri claimed that whatever Thailand invested in promoting the film has been recouped thousands of times over through sustained tourism growth.

Applying this lesson to Lagos, Omokri urged state officials to pursue similar opportunities, especially during Detty December, the annual festive period when the city comes alive with concerts, parties, and events attracting diaspora Nigerians and international visitors.

Known for its energetic nightlife, Afrobeats scene, and cultural celebrations, Detty December has turned Lagos into a major party destination, with millions flocking to events headlined by stars like Wizkid, Davido, and Asake.

Omokri's advice comes as Lagos continues to position itself as Africa's entertainment and tourism hub.

While no official response has come from the state government yet, industry watchers say a high-profile Hollywood production like a Bond film could provide the kind of global exposure that elevates a city's profile overnight.

The next James Bond film remains in early development following the departure of Daniel Craig, with no confirmed locations announced.

If Lagos secures a spot, it could mark a landmark moment for Nigerian tourism on the world stage.
