Barau Pays ₦7m Entitlements to Ex-Kano LG Chairman Amid Withholding Claims

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has personally settled ₦7 million in outstanding entitlements owed to Fa’izu Alfindiki, former Chairman of Kano Municipal Local Government Area, whose benefits were allegedly withheld by the Kano State Government.

The payment was made via a cheque presented to Alfindiki on Tuesday evening at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The gesture comes amid controversies over the settlement of severance packages and gratuities for former local government officials in Kano State under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-led administration.

Alfindiki, a vocal critic of the current state government, was reportedly excluded from earlier disbursements despite serving his full term.

Sources indicate the withholding stemmed from his outspoken stance against certain policies. While presenting the cheque, Senator Barau emphasised the importance of constructive criticism in democracy.

"Constructive criticism, like that of Fa’izu Alfindiki, is the lubricant of democracy. Without it, this system of government will not flourish," he stated, adding that he is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.

In response, Alfindiki expressed profound gratitude, saying, "From the moment this incident happened, I was confident that the APC would stand by me. Today, that confidence has been justified. The Deputy President of the Senate has stood up for me, and for that, I am deeply grateful."

The intervention has sparked discussions in Kano's political circles, with observers viewing it as a stand against the politicisation of statutory entitlements.

It highlights ongoing tensions between federal APC figures and the NNPP state government, underscoring Senator Barau's role in supporting party loyalists and promoting democratic values.

This act aligns with Barau's broader philanthropic and empowerment initiatives in Kano State, further cementing his influence ahead of potential future political contests.
