Former Kano State Governor and National Leader of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has urged the Kano State Commissioner of Police to immediately withdraw security operatives stationed at the Nasarawa Mini Palace, the current residence of the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
Speaking on Tuesday during the official launch of the Kano State Government-owned Neighbourhood Watch Corps in Kano, Kwankwaso reaffirmed that Muhammadu Sanusi II is the sole legitimate Emir of Kano.
He warned that maintaining parallel traditional institutions, backed by security forces, risks undermining peace and stability in the state.
"The legitimate Emir of Kano is Muhammadu Sanusi II. He remains the rightful emir of Kano," Kwankwaso declared, condemning the deployment of police to sustain Bayero's presence at the mini palace as contrary to Kano's cultural traditions and potentially provocative.
He called on security agencies to adhere strictly to the law and avoid actions that could incite public unrest, emphasising the need to redeploy officers to protect ordinary citizens instead.
The ongoing emirship dispute traces its roots to 2020, when then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje dethroned Emir Sanusi over alleged insubordination and divided the Kano Emirate into multiple entities, appointing Bayero as one of the new emirs.
In 2023, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kwankwaso's political protégé repealed the law, abolishing the additional emirates, deposing Bayero, and reinstating Sanusi.
Bayero, however, has contested the decision in court and continues to reside at the Nasarawa Mini Palace, reportedly with federal support amid perceptions of backing from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The event also featured the inauguration of 2,000 operatives for the Neighbourhood Watch Corps, equipped with patrol vehicles and motorcycles to bolster grassroots security across Kano's 44 local government areas.
Governor Yusuf hailed the initiative as a step toward community-based policing and expressed support for President Bola Tinubu's push for state police to address local security challenges more effectively.
Kwankwaso's remarks have reignited tensions in the protracted crisis, with stakeholders closely watching developments as legal battles continue.
