Police Take Over Malami's Azbir Hotel, Arena in Kebbi Amid EFCC Probe

Reports indicate that police operatives have taken control of the Azbir Hotel and Azbir Arena, high-profile properties belonging to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.

The development is the latest escalation in the ongoing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation into allegations of financial misconduct against Malami, including a purported $16.9 million scam related to Abacha loot recovery and accumulation of unexplained wealth.

The Azbir complex, a multi-billion naira hospitality and entertainment facility along Sani Abacha Bypass, has been highlighted in petitions to the EFCC as one of several assets allegedly disproportionate to Malami's known earnings during his tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Malami remains in EFCC custody since early December after failing to meet bail conditions, with a court recently dismissing his application for release.

His supporters, including Kebbi youths who protested over the weekend, maintain that the probe is politically motivated, especially following his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and gubernatorial ambitions.

Earlier reports confirmed EFCC raids on Malami's residences and offices in Abuja and Kebbi, but the reported police takeover of the Azbir properties marks a significant step, potentially linked to asset preservation or further searches.

Neither the police, EFCC, nor Malami's representatives have issued an official statement on the takeover at the time of this report.

The situation continues to draw public attention amid claims of bias from Malami's camp and denials of political persecution by the anti-graft agency.
