The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged to oppose any tax system it deems "distorted, falsified, or driven by political manipulation" as the Federal Government prepares to implement new tax reforms on January 1, 2026.
In a strongly worded Christmas message, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that tax laws passed without meaningful input from workers and other stakeholders would constitute an "unjust tax regime."
Ajaero urged the government to prioritise patience and broad consultation over haste, stating: “It is better to patiently craft a law that is broadly co-created and owned than rush into one filled with serious errors and outright political manipulations.”
He emphasised the need for tax justice, insisting that the wealthy must pay their fair share while eliminating all forms of regressive taxation that disproportionately burden ordinary citizens.
“Together, in this season and beyond, we must insist on tax justice where the rich pay their fair share and all forms of regressive taxation are removed,” Ajaero said.
The labour leader also called for greater equity in the workplace, including fair wages, respect for workers' rights, safer working conditions, and a secure environment where citizens can pursue legitimate businesses without fear.
While encouraging Nigerians to embrace love and unity during the festive period, Ajaero stressed that true national progress requires confronting systemic challenges.
He described the fight against corruption, exploitation, injustice, insecurity, and bad governance as the "most credible, sustainable celebration" Nigerians can undertake.“
This self-love is not selfish; it is strategic," he added. "It is shown in our determination to build ourselves into a strong, disciplined collective to protect our interests, our wages, our pensions, and our dignity."
The NLC's stance comes amid growing controversy over the new tax laws, with critics alleging constitutional breaches and calling for their suspension.
