Backlash Trails Aisha Buhari’s Revelations in Biography of Late Former President

Revelations by former First Lady Aisha Buhari in a new biography of her late husband, Muhammadu Buhari, have sparked controversy and backlash, with critics accusing the book of posthumous revisionism and one-sided narratives.

The 600-page book, titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari and authored by Dr. Charles Omole, was launched at the State House in Abuja on December 15, 2025, attended by President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries.

In the biography, Aisha Buhari alleges that a powerful "cabal" of extended family members, old friends, and associates exploited the late president's fondness for them, manipulating him and hijacking his administration.

She claims these individuals sidelined loyal supporters after the 2015 victory, blurred personal and official boundaries, and even attempted to evict her from the Presidential Villa.

She further reveals that rumours within Aso Rock in 2017 led the late president to briefly suspect she planned to poison him, causing him to lock his room and disrupt a personal nutrition routine she managed, which she says contributed to his health decline that year.

Aisha also states that the late president did not endorse former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's 2023 presidential bid and attributes his final illness to pneumonia, not cancer as speculated.

The disclosures have drawn sharp criticism. Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai urged Nigerians to let the late president "rest in peace," describing the book as containing "red flags" and appearing one-sided.

Political analysts have questioned the timing and motives, with some viewing claims about Osinbajo as an attempt to rewrite history, contrasting them with public statements where Buhari praised his former deputy.

Others have criticised the book's heavy reliance on family anecdotes, arguing it prioritises palace intrigue over balanced analysis of the administration's policies and challenges.

Supporters of the late president defends the biography as an insider's honest account, while the controversy has reignited debates over governance, family influence, and communication lapses during his eight-year tenure.

The book also details Aisha Buhari's resistance to the alleged cabal and her justification for supporting President Tinubu in 2023, citing power shift and electoral viability.
