The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reportedly cleared just two political associations the African Alliance Party (AAP) and the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) to proceed to the final stage of registration as full-fledged political parties, according to sources familiar with the matter.
This development comes months after INEC announced in June 2025 that it had received letters of intent from 110 associations aspiring to become registered political parties ahead of future elections, including the 2027 general polls.
The process has been rigorous, with the commission later updating the total applications to around 171 as additional submissions came in.
In September 2025, INEC pre-qualified 14 associations for the next phase, followed by eight successfully completing document uploads in October.
Sources told TheCable that, following detailed assessments and verifications, only AAP and DLA have met all constitutional and legal requirements to advance to the ultimate registration stage.
The commission is expected to make an official announcement soon, potentially approving their full registration.
INEC has emphasized transparency and strict adherence to Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and its own guidelines throughout the exercise.
The potential emergence of new parties could inject fresh dynamics into Nigeria's multi-party system, providing more options for voters and promoting political inclusivity.
However, final approval remains subject to INEC's conclusive verification of all claims, including national spread, membership, and operational structures.
