Armed cultists invaded an off-campus community in Emuoha Local Government Area of Rivers State on Tuesday, abducting five undergraduate students from Rivers State University (RSU) in a brazen early-morning attack.
The assailants, numbering about five, stormed the students' residence in Rumuchi/Rumuohia around 2 a.m., firing sporadically to scare residents.
They shot dead the compound's security dog before bundling the victims into vehicles and fleeing to an unknown destination.
One female student escaped unharmed after mistaking the initial gunshots for fireworks; she was pursued and fired upon but evaded capture when her assailant abandoned the chase.
The incident follows last week's student protests demanding relocation from the Emuoha satellite campus to the main Port Harcourt campus, citing ongoing harassment and attacks.
University Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi had rejected the move on Monday, promising enhanced security through collaborations with local authorities.
Rivers State Police Command spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the cultist involvement, stating: “In the early hours of Tuesday, a group of cultists... stormed an isolated area of Rumuchi/Rumuohia, shot and abducted five persons to an unknown destination.”
She added that Commissioner of Police Olantunji Disu had mobilized tactical teams to the scene for immediate rescue operations and suspect arrests.
