Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has approved the immediate recall and revalidation of 1,000 teachers whose 2023 appointments were earlier cancelled, in a dramatic U-turn following intense criticism from the Martins Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly over the deplorable state of public schools.
The decision came barely 24 hours after Governor Fubara, on Monday, defended the rot in schools by insisting that the decay “did not start under my administration.”
In a public notice signed by the Chairman of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB), Sam Ogeh, the governor directed that the affected 1,000 teachers report immediately to RSUBEB headquarters with their original appointment and posting letters for revalidation and reinstatement.
The notice stated: “In fulfilment of his promise to bridge the manpower gap in public schools across Rivers State, His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara… has directed the revalidation of the 1,000 teachers recruited in 2023.”
The House of Assembly had, during its plenary the previous Thursday, lambasted the Fubara administration over collapsed school buildings, acute shortage of teachers, and general neglect of the education sector.
