Tragedy struck Irunda Ile community in Kogi State on Wednesday morning, December 3, when suspected bandits launched a deadly attack, killing two local vigilantes, while a subsequent clash between protesting youths and security operatives left two more residents dead.
Community leader and Bobagunwa of Irunda Isanlu, David Oni Sunday, confirmed the incident, stating that bandits invaded the village in the early hours and opened fire on vigilantes who tried to repel them.
After the bandits fled, angry youths took to the streets to protest the recurring attacks and demanded that arriving police officers pursue the assailants into the bush.
According to Oni, the situation escalated when police allegedly fired tear gas and live rounds to disperse the crowd.“From there, they mistakenly killed two youths while others were hospitalised.
In all, four people were killed in our village this morning: two vigilantes by the bandits and two others by the police,” he said.
Kogi State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omadora (rtd), confirmed the attack and the deaths of the two vigilantes but blamed the additional fatalities on the confrontation with youths.
He assured journalists in Lokoja that security forces have intensified operations in Yagba East, including recent helicopter-backed missions that reportedly neutralised several bandits occupying mining sites in the area.
“We are not going to rest until all bandits are completely flushed out. Kogi State will not be a safe haven for criminals,” Omadora declared.
The latest attack has heightened fear among residents, with many calling for sustained military presence to curb the wave of banditry ravaging communities in Yagba East.
