Edo Gov Disburses ₦200m in Cheques, to Families of 47 Deceased Workers

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has presented cheques totaling more than ₦200 million and educational scholarships to 47 families of civil servants who died while in active service, under the state's Group Life Insurance Scheme.

The gesture, announced on Thursday, underscores Okpebholo's administration's commitment to workers' welfare and support for bereaved families, in line with the Pension Reform Act of 2014 and the Edo State Contributory Pension Scheme Law of 2010 (as amended).

"This is not just about insurance; it is about goodness and humanity," Governor Okpebholo said during the presentation ceremony.

"We have a responsibility to support families who have lost their breadwinners. Today, we are ensuring you receive your entitlements and further aiding by providing scholarships to one member from each family, so no one is left behind."

The disbursements were facilitated through a partnership with Tangerine Life Insurance, which handled the claims efficiently.

The governor commended the insurer for its role in positioning Edo as a leader in pension and insurance reforms across Nigeria.

Mr. Kehinde Borisade, Managing Director/CEO of Tangerine Life Insurance, lauded Okpebholo's leadership, stating: "In implementing the Pension and Insurance Acts, Edo State stands out as one of the leading states, if not the leading one. Your Excellency has shown rare compassion by caring for active workers and the families of those who have passed. Few states in Nigeria do this."

Borisade revealed that Tangerine Life has paid benefits to 47 families this year alone, totaling over ₦200 million, thanks to the governor's support.

This initiative builds on Okpebholo's broader welfare reforms since taking office, including minimum wage increases, the absorption of over 5,000 contract teachers into the civil service, and regularization of low-paid cleaners.

In a related move on the same day, the governor commissioned five new vehicles donated to the Edo Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service to improve the transportation of suspects and defendants to court.

The payouts and scholarships are expected to provide immediate financial relief and long-term educational opportunities, easing the burden on families grappling with profound loss.
