Imo State Police Command has killed two suspected kidnappers in a fierce gun battle, arrested 12 others, recovered the decomposing body of a kidnapped victim, several firearms, ammunition and 12 mobile phones in two separate operations.
Police spokesman, DSP Henry Okoye, said the first operation took place along Obudi/Mgbala Road in Oguta LGA where officers from Agwa Division intercepted a gang operating in a white mini-bus.
The suspects opened fire; police returned fire, neutralising two while others escaped with bullet wounds.
In a follow-up raid inside Umuezerokam Forest, Nekede Division in Owerri West LGA, 12 additional suspects were rounded up and dangerous weapons recovered.
The body of the kidnap victim has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy and identification.
Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, commended the officers and vowed to sustain the aggressive onslaught until criminal elements are completely flushed out of Imo.
Meanwhile, the command has strongly denied viral allegations of torture, organ harvesting and extra-judicial killings at its Anti-Kidnapping Unit, popularly called Tiger Base.
DSP Okoye described the claims and an accompanying video as “fabricated and malicious,” orchestrated by disgruntled criminal elements whose syndicates have been dismantled by the unit.
He emphasised that Tiger Base is a duly established tactical squad of the Nigeria Police Force, responsible for the drastic reduction in kidnapping, armed robbery and cult-related violence across the state.
To further demonstrate transparency, CP Danjuma has ordered the immediate creation of a dedicated Human Rights Desk inside the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to handle complaints and ensure strict adherence to global best practices.
The command warned those spreading the false narratives to desist or face prosecution under the Cybercrime Act, while urging residents with genuine grievances to approach the Complaints Response Unit (CRU), X-Squad or the newly created Human Rights Desk.
