Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested two suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Apapa area of Lagos State.
The suspects, identified as Modu Gana and Ibrahim Dugge, were apprehended around 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, December 21, and are currently in detention undergoing interrogation.
Security sources indicate the arrests were based on intelligence suggesting the men had fled the insurgency-plagued North-east region and relocated to Lagos.
As of now, the suspects' intentions in Nigeria's economic hub remain unknown, with no evidence pointing to planned attacks.
However, security experts highlight ISWAP's ongoing efforts to broaden its footprint beyond the North-east, raising alarms about potential infiltration into southern regions.
The DSS has not issued an official statement, adhering to a low-key media approach since redeploying its former spokesperson to enhance operational focus.
The arrests have sparked unease among Lagos residents, underscoring the persistent threat from splinter groups of the long-running Boko Haram insurgency, which has claimed thousands of lives primarily in the North-east.
Recent government reports note significant progress, with thousands of insurgents neutralized or surrendered under the current administration.
