Defence ministry needs experienced leader - Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has called for an experienced hand to lead the Defence Ministry following the resignation of Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru.

It was earlier reported that Badaru stepped down from his position, a development confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement released on Monday.

In his resignation letter, Badaru cited poor health as the reason for leaving office.

President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude to the former minister for his service to the nation.

Badaru, a former two-term governor of Jigawa State, was appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.

Reacting in a post via his verified X handle on Tuesday, Sani said the Defence Ministry needs an experienced person to lead in view of the rising insecurity in the country.

The former lawmaker stated that the country should be able to defend itself against bandits and Boko Haram terrorists.

He wrote, “Whether the Defence minister resigned or was removed, the Defence Ministry needs an experienced hand to lead in view of the exigencies of today.

“Nigeria historically fought in the First and Second World Wars, contributed forces for the restoration of peace in DRC Congo, Tanzania, Lebanon, Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan, etc. The nation should be able to defend itself against these criminal bandits and terrorists.”

  1. Nigeria doesn’t need someone with 80 years of experience to be a defence minister. Why should Nigeria be an exception in nominating an experienced defence minister of 100 years. And, what do you mean by experience, a young man of 50 years could be more experienced more than an 89 old man. We live in a digital world and not an analogous anymore entity. Look at the defence ministers in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic. I know of those of Burkina Faso and Mali. They are between 39 - 45, and there presidents are less than 50 years old. These countries are dominating Africa in terms GDP, economic development, infrastructural growth and they are smashing down the rate of poverty in their respective countries. They built industries that transform their natural resources and this’s something we don’t have in Nigeria with successive leaders which we have been having in Nigeria because they are far older than those leaders in AES. They have made their country proud, and they are the surest nations in the African continent. They fought and defeated the strongholds of Arabs terror groups, Islamic fundamentalist in the Sahel Region, and the way they destroyed them is unbelievable. These young defence ministers travel to Russia, Iran, Turkey, North Korea and China in search of sophisticated weapons and military technology and hardwares to deal with these terror groups that are backed by western countries. They have actually eliminated these terror groups from their countries and secured their citizens against external aggression whereas the old minister of defence in Nigeria doesn’t have the necessary weapons to fight against terrorism since 20 years, and they can not account for funds allocated for the procurement of weapons. We need young people who understand the geopolitics of the world and not those who understand regional politics but pretend they know everything. We are no longer in 1960, mentalities are changing and nations must change as well.
