A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday arraigned activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on five counts of alleged cybercrime, including defaming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by referring to him as a “criminal” on social media platforms X and Facebook.
Justice Mohammed Umar, while granting Sowore bail on self-recognizance (citing his previous status as a presidential candidate and the fact that his international passport remains in court custody), issued a stern warning: any further public statements by Sowore that incite unrest or undermine national security will lead to immediate revocation of his bail.
Sowore, who pleaded not guilty to all charges, is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act 2024 and the Criminal Code Act.
The charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/484/2025, also lists X Inc. (formerly Twitter) and Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook) as the second and third defendants.
Tuesday’s arraignment followed two earlier failed attempts which the prosecution lawyer, Akinolu Kehinde SAN, described as being frustrated by deliberate legal obstacles from the defence.
After Sowore’s lead counsel, Marshall Abubakar, moved an oral application for bail, Justice Umar granted the request but emphasized that the defendant must refrain from making inflammatory statements capable of disturbing public peace.
The case was adjourned for commencement of trial. Further details to follow.
