10 'Detty December' essentials you should never forget

Tis the season to be jolly and merry, or in this part of the world, the season of Detty December.

Detty December is a cultural phenomenon that occurs at the end of the year from December, sometimes running into January. It signifies a period of festivities, concerts, parties and shows; essentially a time to let loose, unwind and have fun.

It's also a time for the IJGBs- the diaspora returnees, to return to their home country and partake in the festivities.

Artists, musicians, clubs, restaurants and the entertainment and hospitality industries have taken advantage of this concept and over the years churned out a series of events that are now widely and globally anticipated. Every year seems even bigger and better than the last.

A lot isn't needed to have fun and 'Detty your December', but, there are a few non-negotiable items that elevate the experience and ensure safety and well-being.

  • Sunscreen:

Granted, most of the activities are nighttime activities, there are still a few hot daytime events and it goes without saying that the skin needs to be protected. Sunscreen is a must have item, especially since all traces of harmattan have disappeared and the sun has returned with a vengeance. Protecting the face and body from the harsh sun rays is a must to avoid looking like burnt bole come January.

  • Power bank:

This goes without saying. Spending long hours outside, taking pictures and videos and several calls, devices are bound to run out of batteries. To avoid getting stranded anywhere, it's advisable to always carry a power bank AND cords around. Some establishments have charging outlets but most don't, while others don't have enough to cater to the influx of people during festivities.

  • Cash:

Cashless economy and transfers are great and all, until network trips off and the options are washing dishes after a meal or sitting at the security post until payment is made. Having emergency cash will never go out of style. A little 1k for parking, 3k tip, or 2k on a bike to avoid traffic, cash will always come in handy. Not to mention the reassurance and confidence it gives.

  • Ride hailing apps:

You can never have too many ride-hailing apps in December. From surges, to busy drivers, and traffic, relying on only one can spell frustration and wahala. Compare prices on different apps, switch to whichever has more options and enjoy a seamless ride to and from your event.

  • Means of identification:

This may seem unnecessary but it's highly essential. When alcohol, tension and festivities are mixed, fights and quarrels are bound to break out. A valid ID ensures easy clearance from trouble and not spending the night in a cell. It also gives easy access to some venues and events.

  • Wipes & sanitizers:

Corona was 5 years ago, yes, but, germs are a never ending cycle. Multiple people visiting and touching places and things means germs flying around. Wipes down surfaces, cutleries and devices before use to ensure fever doesn't come after Detty December.

  • Pain relief patches/balms:

A good ol' aboniki can make all the difference after walking and sightseeing the whole day. Your knees will thank you after a night of 'oblee' in the club if you carry pain relief patches or balms around.

  • Perfume & lip balm:

After a night out or even a day event spent frolicking around, especially in the heat and sun, it's essential to refresh with a quick perfume spray or slick of lip balm to avoid looking and smelling musty. Basically, maintain good hygiene even while out having a good time.

  • Emergency contact:

It is important to have an emergency person or line in case of any accident or problem. It particularly gets rowdy and dangerous around this time of the year and simply letting someone know where you are or where you're going, sharing ride details and live locations can be the difference between a casualty and being safe. Be safety conscious!

  • Antacids:

Detty December is famous for eating and drinking to the fullest. Sometimes after mixing and sampling all day, stomach troubles are inevitable, especially for sensitive and picky eaters. To avoid running around looking for a clean restroom, carry antacids to relieve heartburns and indigestion. These can be prescribed by doctors or gotten over the counter at a pharmacy.

While you party and 'oblee' this December, don't forget these essentials and remember to avoid dodgy gatherings and stay safe!
