Nigeria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at significantly strengthening bilateral defence and military ties.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Dr. Matawalle described the MoU as “a landmark milestone that will bolster Nigeria’s defence architecture and substantially enhance the operational capacity and readiness of our armed forces.”
The framework establishes broad-based cooperation in key areas, including:
- Military training and capacity building
- Joint exercises and drills
- Technical assistance and technology transfer
- Intelligence sharing
- Logistics support
- Counter-terrorism collaboration
- Joint efforts against violent extremism and transnational organised crime
The pact is expected to strengthen both nations’ capabilities in addressing shared security challenges in the Gulf of Guinea, the Sahel, and broader regional stability efforts.
The signing further cements the growing strategic partnership between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, building on existing cooperation in economic, energy, and religious affairs.
