Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has proposed amending the law to require the President to appoint only the highest-ranking officers as service chiefs.
Kanu, speaking during the Senate plenary session on Thursday, argued that selecting anyone below this level triggers the automatic retirement of more senior generals, which he described as unnecessary and harmful.
Countering the idea, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin maintained that the Commander-in-Chief needs unrestricted authority to appoint service chiefs at his discretion, based on the nation’s security demands.
The debate portrays broader tensions in the 10th Senate over balancing military tradition with executive flexibility, with no immediate timeline set for a vote on the amendment. Supporters of Kalu's view argue it could enhance equity, while critics like Jibrin warn it risks politicizing promotions.
