The Senate has begun the process of repealing and re-enacting the Armed Forces Act, with a key provision explicitly prohibiting the enlistment of anyone under 18 years old into Nigeria’s military.
The move aligns the law with the Child Rights Act and international humanitarian standards.Sponsored by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, the bill also extends enhanced protections and rights to non-commissioned officers to improve morale and ensure fairness.
It reinforces the President’s constitutional role as Commander-in-Chief while vesting day-to-day operational command in the Chief of Defence Staff.
Once enacted, the legislation will allow qualified military lawyers to represent the Armed Forces in civil courts.
