Political commentator Mahdi Shehu says many Nigerians are now quietly regretting believing the negative narratives used against former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in the years leading to the 2015 election.
In a birthday message posted on X on Saturday to mark Jonathan’s 68th birthday, Shehu described the former president as well-collected, patient and someone who sacrificed the Villa for Nigeria to remain united.
He argued that even people who opposed Jonathan at the time can now acknowledge his leadership style.
Shehu said those who, according to him, blackmailed Jonathan out of office have become less popular than he ever was.
He recalled that Jonathan was labelled a failure and clueless.
“Those who blackmailed him out of the villa are now more unpopular than he ever was. They called him a failure and clueless, but the same accusations are now their industrial scale trade mark.”
“They said insecurity defined his tenure, while insecurity is now part of their anatomy and physiology. They said he is a reckless spender but now they are not only geometrical reckless spenders but Loan pricks. They said he is a minority but we are now battling with the callousness of those from the major tribes of Yoruba, Igbo and Hausas with certain compromised minority tribes.”
According to Shehu, millions of Nigerians are now lamenting inwardly and silently over being misled in the past.
“I am sure in retrospect Millions of Nigerians are now lamenting inwardly and silently and regretting why they were deceived by the APC blackmailing narrative of Jonathan. Even if those deceived Nigerians with hardened hearts refuse to apologize to President Jonathan, those with a sense of history, fairness and conscience will apologise to him privately or even publicly,” Shehu wrote.
Shehu ended his message with birthday wishes to the former president.
“Happy birthday to Jonathan. May you live longer to laugh loudest as your detractors and blackmailers continue to encounter karma.”
