Health Ministry Debunks Viral Claim of 86% HIV Prevalence in Port Harcourt

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has strongly refuted a widely circulated social media graphic falsely claiming that HIV prevalence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has soared to 86%.

In an official statement, the Ministry described the statistic as “completely fabricated” and emphasized that it bears no resemblance to any real data from Nigeria’s health authorities.“No state in Nigeria has an HIV prevalence rate even remotely close to 86%,” the Ministry clarified, adding that it has never released any advisory or document containing such figures, wording, or formatting as seen in the viral post.

Authorities urged the public to immediately disregard and stop sharing the misleading content, warning that spreading unverified health information can cause unnecessary panic and harm.

For accurate and up-to-date HIV statistics and guidelines, Nigerians are advised to consult only trusted official sources, including:

The National AIDS and STIs Control Programme (NASCP).

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).

Verified publications from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The Ministry reiterated its dedication to delivering evidence-based, reliable health information and combating misinformation that undermines public trust and safety.
