The Federal Government has announced a major breakthrough in security ties with the United States following a week-long visit to Washington by a high-level Nigerian delegation led by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
In a State House press release issued on Monday, the government said the engagements have paved the way for enhanced intelligence sharing, faster approval of defence equipment requests, and possible transfer of excess U.S. defence articles to support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
The delegation, which included the Attorney General of the Federation Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, and other top security officials, held wide-ranging talks with senior officials from the U.S. Congress, White House Faith Office, State Department, National Security Council, and Department of Defense.
A key focus of the visit was to counter what Nigeria described as “misleading narratives” of genocide and religiously motivated persecution.
The delegation stressed that violent attacks in Nigeria cut across religious and ethnic lines and affect communities of all faiths, warning that framing the crisis otherwise only deepens division and distorts the true situation.
The United States responded positively, reaffirming its commitment to stronger bilateral security partnership.
Additional areas of cooperation will include:
Humanitarian assistance to displaced populations, especially in the Middle Belt
Technical support for early-warning and conflict-prevention systems
Immediate activation of a non-binding cooperation framework
Establishment of a Joint Working Group for coordinated implementation
Nigeria, in turn, renewed its pledge to boost civilian protection measures and address the root causes of insecurity.
The Federal Government described the outcome of the visit as a “constructive, solution-oriented partnership” that corrects misconceptions, rebuilds mutual trust, and advances practical steps to protect vulnerable communities.
Citizens were urged to remain calm and confident that decisive actions are being taken at the highest levels to safeguard lives and secure the nation.
