Just two days after securing a 20-year jail sentence against ISWAP leader Hussaini Ismaila for terrorism-related offences, the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday arraigned two high-profile suspects before the Federal High Court in Abuja on separate serious charges.
In the first case, Abdulmalik Abdulazeez Obadaki alleged mastermind of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack on Deeper Life Bible Church in Okene, Kogi State was docked on six counts, including membership of a terrorist organisation, conspiracy to commit terrorism, rendering support to acts of terrorism, concealing information about terrorist activities, and escaping from lawful custody.
Obadaki pleaded guilty to the sixth count of escaping from lawful custody but not guilty to the remaining five terrorism-related charges.
Justice Joyce Obehi Abdulmalik adjourned the matter to 26 January 2026 for review of facts on the guilty plea and commencement of trial on the contested counts.
The suspect was ordered remanded in DSS custody pending the next hearing.Security sources allege that after the Okene church bombing, Obadaki led armed robberies on five banks in Uromi, Edo State, resulting in multiple deaths and the theft of large sums of money.
He was arrested and remanded at Kuje Custodial Centre but escaped during the July 2022 jailbreak orchestrated by terrorists. Sources claim Obadaki has since confessed to planning that prison break after being transferred from Kabba Custodial Centre in June 2022.
In a separate prosecution on the same day, social media user Innocent Chukwuemeka was arraigned on six counts of publishing false information likely to cause public alarm and cyberstalking for allegedly using his X (formerly Twitter) account to openly canvass for a military coup in Nigeria.
Chukwuemeka pleaded not guilty. The court fixed 26 January 2026 for commencement of hearing and remanded him in DSS custody.
The back-to-back arraignments underscore the DSS’s ongoing crackdown on terrorism and threats to national security barely 48 hours after the agency recorded a significant courtroom victory against an ISWAP commander.
