Abia Govt Pays ₦20m Compensation to Victims of Aba Billboard Collapse

The Abia State Government has disbursed over ₦20 million in compensation to nine victims of the May 28 billboard collapse in Aba, which killed a tricyclist and injured others near Salad Market.

Governor Alex Otti had directed full coverage of medical bills and an immediate audit of all billboards statewide through the Abia State Signage and Advertising Agency (ABSAA).

Cheques were presented Monday at Government House, Umuahia. The deceased tricyclist’s widow, Chioma Destiny, received ₦9.6 million (₦8 million for business investment and ₦1.6 million for her husband’s damaged tricycle, which will be returned).

Five other tricyclists each got ₦1.6 million plus their recovered vehicles, while two shop owners received ₦500,000 each.Senior Special Assistant on Transportation, Dr. Obioma Nwaogbe, said the payments made upfront through ABSAA ensure victims resume normal lives, with recovery ongoing from the billboard owners.

ABSAA CEO Victoria Onwubiko praised the government’s swift action, noting enhanced safety audits and stricter outdoor advertising regulations to prevent future incidents.

Victims, including ASTOPU Chairman Azubuike Victor, hailed Otti’s intervention as unprecedented.

Chioma Destiny pledged to invest the funds in business to support her children’s education.
