The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confirmed it will fully implement a ban on producing and selling alcoholic drinks in sachets and PET/glass bottles under 200ml by December 2025, following a fresh Senate directive.
NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye stated that the measure backed by the Senate and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare aligns with the agency’s core duty to protect public health, especially children, teens, and young adults at risk from accessible, low-cost alcohol.
“This is a protective, not punitive, policy,” Adeyeye said, citing scientific data showing the dangers of such packaging. She stressed that short-term profits must not override citizens’ long-term health.
To support the rollout, NAFDAC will partner with the Ministry of Health, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) for nationwide awareness campaigns highlighting the health and social risks of sachet and small-bottle alcohol.
