Niger State Government Refutes Claims of N100,800 Tax on Petty Traders

The Niger State Government has dismissed a report by an online media platform alleging that the Niger State Environmental Protection Agency (NISEPA) imposed a N100,800 tax on petty traders across business premises and markets in the state’s 25 local councils.

Dr. Abubakar Muhammad, NISEPA’s General Manager, addressed journalists in Minna, calling the report entirely false.

He clarified that NISEPA operates an established system for categorizing businesses and assigning levies, which follows a historical framework and is not arbitrarily imposed.

Dr. Muhammad emphasized that the agency uses an automated billing system to ensure accurate billing for registered businesses, explicitly excluding petty traders.

He highlighted NISEPA’s “pay-as-you-throw” initiative, launched on October 10, 2024, which allows small business owners to purchase litter bags for N150 to manage waste responsibly.

Designated evacuation vans collect these bags, easing the burden on petty traders. He warned that non-compliance with the pay-as-you-throw system could lead to businesses being misclassified in the automated system, resulting in incorrect billing.

“If a petty trader receives a bill of N100 or N800, it’s not normal,” he said, noting that accurate bills for traders typically start at N25,200. He urged traders to scan their billing barcodes to verify amounts owed.

Dr. Muhammad condemned the spread of misinformation and called for responsible reporting that reflects NISEPA’s efforts to improve waste management.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to transparency, discipline, and fairness, urging all businesses in Niger State to comply with responsible waste disposal practices.
