Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has taken a significant step toward modernizing transportation at her alma mater, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), by delivering 21 brand-new shuttle buses to the institution.
The donation, announced by the university, marks the first phase of her pledge to provide 50 buses to overhaul OAU’s outdated intra-campus transport system.
The initiative traces back to October 2024, when Mrs. Tinubu, attending the 50th birthday celebration of the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, expressed dismay at the university’s reliance on commercial motorcycles for campus mobility.
“This is not befitting of a 21st-century world-class African University,” she declared, citing safety and efficiency concerns. Moved by her deep ties to OAU, she committed to donating 50 shuttle buses to transform the system.
Exactly one year later, on October 10, 2025, the first 21 white shuttle buses rolled onto campus, greeted by enthusiastic students and staff under the vibrant Ife sun.
The university’s statement described the delivery as a “milestone in modernizing our beleaguered transportation infrastructure,” easing the daily commute for thousands of students and faculty.
The university anticipates the remaining 29 buses will further bolster its transport system, cementing Mrs. Tinubu’s legacy as a champion of educational progress.
