Oworosonki Demolition: Lagos State Rules Out Compensation for Illegal Property Owners

The Lagos State Government has declared that property owners and occupants displaced by the recent demolition of unapproved buildings and shanties along Iyana Oworo and Lekki coastlines will not receive compensation.

This statement follows the demolition exercise carried out last Saturday in Ojulari Community, Oworosonki, led by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), targeting illegal structures along the coastlines.

Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, made this known during a quarterly media briefing on Tuesday at Alausa, Ikeja.

The demolitions came shortly after the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development warned that the daily dredging of 10,625 cubic metres of sand in Lagos threatens the ecosystem, aquatic habitats, and the stability of lagoon and waterfront areas.

Displaced residents protested on Monday, blocking the Third Mainland Bridge to demand compensation, but Olumide clarified, “There is no plan to compensate displaced Oworosonki residents, though the governor retains the authority to approve compensation if deemed necessary.”

In a related development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is set to launch a new agency tasked with recovering and repurposing over 3,000 hectares of unused informal spaces across Lagos.

Olumide revealed that these reclaimed lands will be transformed into parking lots, gardens, shopping malls, and other facilities in partnership with the private sector, aiming to enhance the state’s urban landscape.

Additionally, Governor Sanwo-Olu has extended the amnesty period for owners of unapproved buildings to regularise their properties until December 31, 2024.

Initially set to end in October, the extension follows a 90-day amnesty from May 2 to July 30, 2024, designed to allow property owners to obtain planning permits without penalties.

Olumide noted that the extension accommodates the high volume of applications and includes ongoing public awareness campaigns.

The amnesty programme offers waived penal fees and discounts for payments completed within 10 working days.

To apply, property owners must submit documents such as proof of ownership, survey plans, as-built architectural and structural drawings, non-destructive integrity test reports (if applicable), and tax compliance evidence at LASPPPA offices across Lagos or its headquarters in Ikeja.

Olumide emphasized that the initiative supports the Sanwo-Olu administration’s goal of fostering a sustainable, organized, and livable Lagos while addressing economic challenges in the built environment sector.
