Tinubu Declares Hospital Power Crisis a National Emergency, Pledges Urgent Action

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared the persistent power outages plaguing Nigeria’s hospitals a national emergency, emphasizing that unreliable electricity in healthcare facilities is a life-threatening crisis demanding immediate action.

Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the inaugural National Stakeholders’ Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector in Abuja on Wednesday, Tinubu underscored that affordable and consistent power is critical to improving healthcare delivery and rebuilding public trust in the system.

“In surgical theatres, maternity wards, intensive care units, laboratories, and emergency rooms across the country, power outages too often compromise safety, interrupt care, and cost lives,” Tinubu stated.

“These outages cannot continue, and under our administration, they should not. Lives are at stake. We must act now.”

The President praised the collaboration between the Federal Ministries of Health and Power, signaling his administration’s commitment to fostering synergy among Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to deliver sustainable solutions.

He called for concrete outcomes from the dialogue, including policy alignment, mandatory energy audits for hospitals, mobilization of social and green financing, and a robust accountability framework to ensure results.

“This dialogue must not be a talk shop,” Tinubu urged. “Its success will be measured by uninterrupted light in our hospitals, the hum of functioning equipment, and the renewed confidence of every Nigerian who walks into a public health facility.”

The declaration comes amid growing concerns over the dire state of power supply in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, where frequent outages have disrupted critical medical procedures and endangered patients.

The initiative aligns with Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure and healthcare improvements to enhance quality of life.

Stakeholders at the dialogue, including health and power sector experts, vowed to work toward innovative financing models and renewable energy solutions to address the crisis.

The government’s focus on green financing signals a push toward sustainable energy sources, such as solar, to power hospitals reliably.
