The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle psychoactive drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), underscoring the facility's heightened vigilance amid ongoing security challenges.
The incident unfolded around 12:45 a.m. on Saturday when a visitor, identified as Njimogu Ikedi, tried to conceal substances suspected to be cannabis sativa and other psychoactive drugs in his clothing while attempting to meet an inmate.
Routine checks by on-duty personnel uncovered the contraband, preventing it from entering the facility.Command Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, Mr. Samson Duza, confirmed the development in a statement released on Monday.
He quoted Controller of Corrections, Mr. Christopher Jen, who ordered Ikedi's immediate arrest and directed that the suspect be transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
Jen issued a stern warning to potential offenders, urging visitors with malicious intentions to abandon such schemes.
"The Service’s vigilant personnel will continue to uncover their machinations," he emphasized, while appealing to the public and well-meaning Nigerians to support NCoS efforts in offender rehabilitation and public safety promotion.
