NRC Boosts Abuja-Kaduna Train Staff with 95% Salary Hike, Mandatory Training Program

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has launched a transformative initiative to enhance worker welfare and service quality on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), announcing a 95 per cent salary increase for all staff and a mandatory four-day refresher training program, both set to roll out before the end of 2025.

The announcement marks a significant step toward addressing long-standing concerns about poor remuneration and operational inefficiencies in Nigeria’s railway sector.

The NRC aims to boost staff morale, curb attrition, and elevate passenger experience on the critical Abuja-Kaduna corridor, a key artery for commuters.

The four-day training program will involve all AKTS personnel, including drivers, engineers, ticketing officers, safety staff, and customer service representatives.

According to the NRC, the training will focus on:Safety and Security Awareness: Drills and lectures on managing emergencies, addressing security threats, and collaborating with law enforcement.

Customer Service Excellence: Enhancing professionalism, communication, and efficiency in passenger interactions.

Technical Proficiency: Updating engineers and drivers on modern operational standards, signaling systems, and rolling stock maintenance.

Crisis Management: Equipping staff to handle disruptions like breakdowns or delays with minimal impact on passengers.

The NRC noted that training will be conducted in batches to ensure uninterrupted service on the route.

The 95 per cent salary increment, described as a landmark move, will nearly double the wages of AKTS staff by the end of 2025.

For years, railway workers have decried lower pay compared to their counterparts in aviation and road transport. Analysts suggest the raise will not only improve motivation but also reduce corruption and retain skilled professionals within the NRC.

Mr. Fidet Okhiria, NRC Managing Director, emphasized the importance of the initiatives. “Our workers are the heart of Nigeria’s rail system. The Abuja-Kaduna Train Service is a vital lifeline, and this salary hike and training program reflect our commitment to rewarding dedication while ensuring top-tier service,” he stated.

The announcement has been met with optimism from the Railway Workers Union, which called the measures “a turning point for the sector.”

Commuters and stakeholders are hopeful that these reforms will enhance reliability and safety on the Abuja-Kaduna route, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s railway network.
