In a bold move to consolidate opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections, a coalition of Nigerian political heavyweights has called on key figures—including Labour Party's Peter Obi, Social Democratic Party's Nasir El-Rufai, and PDP's Senator Aminu Tambuwal—to immediately resign from their current parties and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as full members.
The directive emerged from a high-stakes meeting of coalition leaders held in Abuja on Thursday, where the group formally abandoned plans for the unregistered All Democratic Alliance (ADA) and reaffirmed the ADC as its unified platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu's administration.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the coalition's National Publicity Secretary, described the decision as a pivotal resolution aimed at streamlining efforts for a stronger electoral showdown.
"The Coalition has rested everything concerning the ADA. That means they are not interested in the registration or otherwise of the association," Abdullahi told reporters, emphasizing the shift toward the established ADC structure.
He added that all presidential aspirants within the coalition have pledged unanimous support for whichever candidate emerges victorious from the primaries.
The Abuja gathering drew an impressive lineup of political luminaries, underscoring the coalition's broad appeal across party lines.
Attendees included National Chairman David Mark, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, former Sokoto State Governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal, and former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
Their presence signals a deepening alliance that blends northern and southern influences, with roots in the PDP, Labour Party, and even former APC affiliates.
This latest push builds on earlier coalition maneuvers, where Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai, and others had already signaled intentions to converge under the ADC banner earlier this year.
However, Abdullahi's "quit notice" marks a firmer stance, urging holdouts like Obi and El-Rufai—who have been navigating pending electoral commitments in their legacy parties—to expedite their transitions.
In a related development, the coalition's National Working Committee (NWC) is set to announce dates for primary elections in Osun and Ekiti States imminently.
These off-cycle governorship polls, slated for later this year, will serve as a litmus test for the ADC's organizational prowess and could accelerate defections from major parties.
Abdullahi stressed the coalition's commitment to internal democracy, assuring stakeholders that primaries would be fair and merit-based, with no pre-anointed favorites.
"All the presidential aspirants have agreed to support whoever wins the primaries election," he reiterated, framing the move as a step toward genuine unity against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
