Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, participated in a series of high-profile events during Black Congressional Week in Washington, DC, on Thursday, September 25, culminating in his conferment as an Honorary Citizen of Georgia.
Obi’s day began with the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception, hosted by U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Reverend Raphael Warnock at the U.S. Senate Kennedy Caucus Room.
Senator Warnock, a vocal advocate for Africa’s development, invited Obi to share insights on African democracy and development, sparking discussions on the continent’s political and economic progress.
Next, Obi engaged with Georgia Power, the state’s largest independent power company, which generates and distributes over 20,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide.
In a meeting with the company’s CEO, Ms. Kim Clark, Obi described the conversation as “deeply insightful,” focusing on energy sector innovations and their potential relevance to Nigeria’s chronic power challenges.
Obi also attended the One Voice Africa event, organized by a group dedicated to defending the dignity of Black immigrants.
Addressing the gathering, he urged participants to champion good governance in Africa, emphasizing that the continent’s vast potential could be unlocked through visionary and responsible leadership.
The day’s highlight was the conferment of Honorary Citizenship of Georgia by the State of Georgia, recognizing Obi’s contributions to global leadership and advocacy for development.
Reflecting on the honor, Obi reiterated his commitment to learning, serving, and building a “new Nigeria that is truly possible.”
