Senator Moro: PDP’s Northern Candidate Blunder Cost 2023 Election

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has conceded that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) erred gravely by selecting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, abandoning its zoning tradition.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on August 26, 2025, Moro admitted that fielding a northern candidate to succeed a northern president alienated voters and significantly contributed to the party’s defeat.

“In 2022, the PDP threw open its zoning arrangement to wrest power from the APC, aiming to put our best foot forward. That decision backfired because people rejected a northern candidate succeeding a northern president, and it cost us the election,” Moro explained.

He revealed that the PDP has since reassessed its strategy, acknowledging the misstep.

“We’ve been reconciling and reviewing what happened. Virtually all of us agreed that fielding a northern candidate in 2023 was a mistake,” he said.

To address this, the PDP has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, a decision Moro described as driven by a commitment to unity, fairness, and justice.

“Nigerians spoke through the election, and it was clearly an error,” he added.Reflecting on the loss, Moro called it a “monumental” and “disastrous” setback for the party.

The PDP’s recent zoning decision aims to rebuild trust and unify the party as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
