Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is actively engaging former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s Peter Obi to return to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on August 26, 2025, Moro disclosed ongoing discussions aimed at positioning the duo as potential PDP flagbearers to reclaim power.
Moro stated, “Certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, urging him to return to the PDP with the possibility of being our candidate.”
On Jonathan’s potential comeback, he added, “Some persons are discussing with the former president to run.
It’s a possibility.”Jonathan, who led Nigeria from 2011 to 2015, made history as the first incumbent president to lose re-election in 2015 to Muhammadu Buhari.
Since then, he has stayed largely apolitical, though supporters have pushed for his return. Meanwhile, Obi, a former PDP vice-presidential candidate in 2019, defected to the Labour Party for the 2023 election, where his youth-driven campaign secured a third-place finish behind APC’s Bola Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.
As 2027 approaches, Obi has joined forces with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition but has not confirmed his party platform for another presidential run.
The PDP’s recent decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South is set to influence these talks, signaling a strategic push for a competitive opposition in the upcoming elections.
