Scores of pensioners took to the streets of Lagos on Monday to protest the non-payment of their pension entitlements, some of which have been outstanding for 35 months.
The retirees, primarily from various state government sectors, gathered at the Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa, chanting slogans and displaying placards demanding immediate action from the state government.
The protesters, under the aegis of the Lagos State Retirees Association, expressed frustration over the prolonged delay in receiving their pensions and gratuities, which they claim has plunged many into financial hardship.
“We served this state diligently for decades, yet we are left to beg for our rightful entitlements,” said Chief Adebayo Ogunleye, the association’s chairman, who led the demonstration.
He noted that the unpaid pensions have left many retirees unable to afford basic necessities, including healthcare and food.
The pensioners accused the Lagos State government of neglecting their plight despite repeated promises to clear the backlog.
According to a statement from the association, over 5,000 retirees are affected, with some having waited since 2022 for their entitlements.
The protesters also criticized the state’s pension administration for alleged inefficiencies and lack of transparency.
In response, a senior official from the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), who spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledged the delays but attributed them to “administrative bottlenecks” and ongoing verification processes to eliminate fraudulent claims.
The official assured that the government is working to resolve the issue and has begun disbursing funds to some retirees.
The protest, which caused a temporary disruption to traffic around the secretariat, ended peacefully with the pensioners vowing to continue their agitation until their demands are met.
They have given the state government a one-week ultimatum to commence payment or face further demonstrations.
The Lagos State government is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
