A violent clash in Kuchibuyi, community in the Kubwa area of the Federal community in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has left one youth dead, several others injured, and multiple residents arrested following an alleged land-grabbing incident involving the Chairman of Bwari Area Council, John Gabaya.
According to sources, the unrest erupted on Saturday, August 2, 2025, when military personnel, police officers, and surveyors, reportedly backed by Gabaya and the Managing Director of Grow Homes Estate Ltd., Mr. Roland, stormed the community to conduct surveys on disputed land.
The incident began earlier this year when surveyors, accompanied by military personnel, entered Kuchibuyi on February 1, 2025, claiming the land had been allocated by the Bwari Area Council for a mini barracks to house retired military personnel.
A survey map, allegedly authorized by the council, was sent to the village head, Isiaka Dauda, with promises of formal documentation to follow.
Tensions escalated on August 2 when Mr. Roland returned with a new team of surveyors, prompting resistance from local youths questioning the legal basis of the land allocation.
Sources report that the confrontation turned deadly when soldiers and police officers clashed with the youths, resulting in one fatality and severe injuries to others.
Several residents were also arrested during the chaos. “The village of Kuchibuyi, known for supplying agricultural produce to Kubwa and Abuja, was thrown into anguish and anger,” a community source confirmed.
The deceased’s body was reportedly removed by security forces, and the whereabouts of the injured remain unconfirmed, with allegations of efforts to suppress information about the incident.
The councillor representing Byazhin/Kuchibiyi Ward, Hon. Dogara J. Ahmed, confirmed the incident, stating, “One person died, and two others were injured,” adding that he was gathering full details.
The FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, described the unrest as a “civil dispute” over land, confirming arrests and ongoing investigations but declining to address the reported fatality or injuries directly.
She noted that the Divisional Police Officers of Byazhin and Kubwa divisions swiftly restored order.
Community members allege that the land grab is tied to the construction of a new road by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, connecting Kuchibuyi to Kubwa and Bwari, which has increased the area’s value and attracted speculative interests.
“This is the secret behind the unexplained wealth of the Chairman and his council members,” one source claimed, alleging corruption within the Bwari Area Council.
The incident adds to ongoing security concerns in Bwari, where residents have faced repeated attacks and kidnappings, including the abduction of two of Gabaya’s siblings in January 2024.
Community members are planning protests to the FCT Minister’s office and police headquarters to demand justice and address the rising insecurity, exacerbated by poor infrastructure like dilapidated roads that give criminals an advantage.
The FCT Police Command, through SP Adeh, urged residents to cooperate with authorities and avoid spreading unverified information, emphasizing their commitment to safety.
However, the incident has sparked outrage, with calls for accountability and an end to alleged land-grabbing practices in the FCT.
