Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command successfully rescued a 27-year-old man trapped for nearly ten hours under the rubble of a collapsed three-storey building in the Life Camp area of Abuja on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
The victim, identified as Aliyu Salisu, a citizen of the Niger Republic, was pulled from the debris in a dramatic early-morning operation and is now receiving treatment at Cedar Crest Hospital in Gudu, where he is responding well.
The FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, detailing the swift response to a distress call received at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Saturday.
The Divisional Police Officer of Life Camp Division immediately mobilized a rescue team, cordoned off the site, and launched a coordinated search and rescue effort.
The operation saw collaboration between the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Development Control Department of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and personnel from Zeberced and Julius Berger construction companies, bolstered by multi-agency patrol and enforcement teams.
After an intense and delicate operation, rescue teams successfully extracted Salisu from the rubble at about 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 3.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, who was present throughout the operation, praised the professionalism and rapid response of all agencies involved.
“The teamwork and dedication displayed here saved a life, and I commend everyone for their efforts,” he said.
The cause of the building collapse remains under investigation, with authorities yet to release further details.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about building safety standards in the FCT, prompting calls for stricter oversight.
The FCT Police Command urged residents to stay vigilant and report emergencies or suspicious activities promptly to aid swift responses.
Salisu’s rescue has been hailed as a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated emergency operations in the capital.
