Renowned Nigerian musician Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has ignited a firestorm of debate with a bold claim that the global music industry is under the influence of the devil.
The statement, made during an exclusive interview with The Punch Newspaper, has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s entertainment scene and beyond, prompting reactions from fans, industry insiders, and religious leaders.
9ice, a veteran artist celebrated for hits like Gongo Aso and Living Things, made the provocative remark while discussing the challenges facing modern musicians.
“The music industry, as it is today, is controlled by the devil,” the 45-year-old singer declared.
“The messages in many songs, the lifestyles promoted, and the forces behind the scenes are pushing agendas that go against moral and spiritual values.” He pointed to the glorification of materialism, substance abuse, and immorality in some mainstream music as evidence of this influence.
The artist, who has been a prominent figure in Nigeria’s Afrobeats scene for over two decades, clarified that his comments were not aimed at any specific individual or genre but were a reflection on the broader industry.
“It’s not about Afrobeats or any one style. It’s about the system—how artists are pressured to conform to certain narratives to gain fame and wealth.
That’s where the devil comes in, manipulating creativity for profit,” he explained.
