Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, has accused northern political elites of promoting former President Goodluck Jonathan as a 2027 election contender to undermine President Bola Tinubu, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and other southern candidates.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on August 8, 2025, Kachikwu alleged that ADC coalition leaders told Obi, an Igbo, he could not secure northern votes and should settle for a vice-presidential role under PDP’s 2023 candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Kachikwu claimed the ADC’s legal team filed petitions against an “unlawful takeover” of the party by former Senate President David Mark and ex-Minister Rauf Aregbesola to support Atiku’s ambitions.
He said the ADC, unveiled on July 1 as an opposition coalition, has faced deepening North-South-East divisions.
Kachikwu further alleged that northern leaders have criticized Tinubu’s administration while spreading “deliberate falsehoods” against southern candidates, positioning Jonathan to entice Obi with a promise of Coordinating Minister of the Economy.
"Nigerians are the losers because meritocracy has been abandoned,” Kachikwu stated, accusing Atiku and northern elites of failing to address poverty and undereducation in the North while orchestrating a “one-man power grab” within the ADC.
Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, rejected the claims, labeling Kachikwu a Tinubu APC agent.
Ibe defended Atiku as a detribalised leader and criticized Tinubu’s administration for causing hardship.
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi insisted the coalition was legally sound and challenged critics to provide evidence of constitutional breaches.
