Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has filed a N60 billion lawsuit against social commentator Reno Omokri at the Enugu State High Court on July 31, 2025, accusing him of making defamatory and prejudicial statements.
Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja, filed the suit on behalf of himself and IPOB, naming Omokri as the sole defendant.
Court documents obtained by Premium Times reveal that Kanu alleges Omokri falsely linked him and IPOB to violent attacks and killings in South-east Nigeria, specifically citing a July 6, 2025, post on Omokri’s X account.
The post reportedly accused Kanu and IPOB’s Eastern Security Network (ESN) of being responsible for the deaths of security personnel and activities of “unknown gunmen” in the region.
Kanu claims these statements are false, defamatory, and damaging to his reputation, exposing him to public hatred and prejudicing his ongoing trial.
Kanu’s lawyer, P.N. Agazie, stated that a pre-action notice was served to Omokri on July 10, 2025, demanding a retraction, a public apology in two national dailies, and a written commitment to cease such claims.
Omokri’s failure to comply prompted the lawsuit.
Kanu argues that the statements violate his right to a fair hearing and presumption of innocence under Section 36(5) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, amounting to contempt of court.
Kanu is seeking N50 billion in general damages for reputational harm and emotional distress, N10 billion in aggravated damages for malicious publication, a court-ordered retraction and apology within seven days, and a perpetual injunction against Omokri to prevent further defamatory publications.
No hearing date has been set for the case.Kanu, extradited from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021, remains on trial for terrorism-related charges.
IPOB, which seeks an independent Biafran state, has consistently denied allegations of orchestrating deadly attacks in Nigeria’s South-east and South-south regions.
