Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, on Saturday, August 2, 2025, flagged off an ambitious distribution of 400 truckloads of free fertilizers to 100,000 smallholder farmers across the state’s 23 local government areas, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to transforming agriculture.
The launch, held at Murtala Square in Kaduna, also marked the introduction of a crop risk insurance scheme to protect farmers from losses due to pests, diseases, and climate-related weather challenges.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Sani emphasized that each smallholder farmer would receive two bags of fertilizer at no cost, a policy he noted is unique to Kaduna State.
“Kaduna remains the only state where smallholder farmers consistently receive fertilizer and other critical inputs free of charge,” he said, highlighting the initiative as part of a broader strategy to ensure food security and rural prosperity.
Additionally, commercial farmers will access up to 10 bags of fertilizer at a 40% subsidized rate of N30,000 per bag to boost large-scale production, job creation, and market price stability.
The governor attributed the program’s feasibility to improved security, noting that previously inaccessible farmlands are now cultivable.
He also highlighted a significant increase in agricultural funding, from N1.48 billion in 2023 to N74.02 billion in 2025, a 4,871% rise, with agriculture’s share of the state budget growing from 0.4% to 10%.
“This is not a standalone event but part of a coordinated approach to make agriculture a pathway to prosperity,” Sani stated.
The distribution, described as the largest in Kaduna’s history, was overseen by a multi-stakeholder committee led by Commissioner for Agriculture Murtala Dabo, including prominent figures like Gen.
Zamani Lekwot (rtd), Sheikh Mahmud Gumi, ICT experts, media veterans, and representatives from labor unions and civil society.
The committee ensured transparency and inclusivity, with tight security and seamless logistics reported at the event.
Building on last year’s success, where 500 truckloads benefited 120,000 farmers, this initiative follows other agricultural interventions, including support for dry season farming, ginger recovery programs, and mechanization with 200 tractors.
Governor Sani urged beneficiaries to use the inputs responsibly, assuring that “no farmer will be left behind” as Kaduna advances its agricultural revolution.
The vibrant turnout of farmers, traditional rulers, clerics, security chiefs, and development partners underscored the initiative’s significance, with the governor’s Chief of Staff, Malam Sani Liman Kila, declaring, “Kaduna’s agricultural revolution is clearly in motion.”
