Nigeria’s Seaports Halts Activities, Over 5,000 Cargoes Trapped, N2 Trillion Lost

Nigeria’s seaports, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Onne, have faced severe disruptions for two weeks, stranding over 5,000 cargoes and costing port users an estimated N2 trillion in demurrage.

The crisis stems from persistent glitches in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) B’Odogwu digital platform, critical for cargo clearance.

Importers and manufacturers are reeling from delays, with demurrage fees piling up as containers remain stuck.

Small businesses face potential bankruptcy as the financial burden grows. The B’Odogwu platform, meant to streamline customs processes, has been plagued by server issues and software bugs.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) reports reduced revenue and port activity, while industry groups like the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) demand urgent action.

MAN’s Segun Ajayi-Kadir called the situation “a major setback,” urging a backup system.

ANLCA’s Emenike Nwokeoji warned of looming supply chain issues and rising costs. The NCS apologized, stating its team is working to fix the platform.

With no clear resolution timeline, the economic fallout threatens Nigeria’s trade and manufacturing sectors.
