MKO Abiola's wife, Dr.Doyin Abiola d!es at 82


Dr. Doyin Abiola, the first female Managing Director and Publisher of National Concord newspapers and wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, at approximately 9:15 p.m., according to family sources.A trailblazer in Nigerian journalism, Dr. Abiola was the first woman to serve as Editor of a national daily newspaper. 


Her illustrious career began in 1969 at Daily Sketch, where she launched a popular column, Tiro, addressing critical issues, including gender equality. 


In 1970, she pursued a master’s degree in Journalism in the United States, returning to join the Daily Times as a Features Writer. 


She later rose to Group Features Editor before earning a PhD in communications and political science in New York in 1979.


Upon her return, Dr. Abiola joined the Daily Times editorial board, working alongside renowned editors like Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan. 


Her tenure there was brief, as she was soon recruited by the newly established National Concord as its pioneer daily editor. 


In 1986, she made history again as the first Nigerian woman to become Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of a daily newspaper.


Dr. Abiola’s career at National Concord spanned three decades, during which she held various influential roles in Nigeria’s media industry. She married Chief MKO Abiola in 1981.
