Lagos Urges Residents in Flood-Hit Lekki, Ikorodu, Ajegunle to Relocate to Higher Ground

On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued an urgent call for residents in flood-prone areas of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle to move to higher ground due to persistent heavy rainfall.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Wahab cited forecasts of intensified rainfall and heightened disaster risks in low-lying areas, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

“Residents around Ajilete in Ajegunle, Majidun in Ikorodu, and parts of the Lekki corridor must relocate,” Wahab urged, also flagging Isheri in the OPIC area as a high-risk zone.

He noted that Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja are currently less affected by severe flooding. The warning follows torrential rains starting Sunday night, August 3, which submerged homes, stranded vehicles, and disrupted daily life across Lagos.

Viral videos captured waterlogged streets and significant damage to infrastructure. Wahab attributed the crisis to climate change, noting that Lagos, as a coastal city, is particularly susceptible to flash flooding.

The state government is actively expanding flood channels and clearing drainage systems to mitigate damage.

Wahab emphasized the need for resilient infrastructure and public cooperation, stating, “We won’t lie to Lagosians.

If nature takes its course, our job is to reduce the impact.”He urged residents to remain calm, follow official guidance, and relocate from vulnerable areas to ensure safety, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
