At a recent stakeholders' meeting, Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services, Lagos State Government, raised concerns about water quality in the Lekki area, stating that boreholes in the region are likely drawing contaminated water, which he bluntly described as "shit water."
Adegbite noted that recent heavy rainfall, unusual for the August break, has exacerbated flooding issues due to complex environmental factors.
He highlighted ongoing efforts to address flooding but emphasized that significant work remains.
On wastewater management, he warned that untreated wastewater in Lekki poses health risks, as borehole users may be consuming contaminated water.
The state has plans to improve wastewater treatment in the area, which Adegbite said would help eliminate diseases linked to untreated waste and improve water safety for residents.
